Arthur James Powell

Arthur James Powell passed away March 15, 2024, at the age of 74.

James was born 10-1-1949 in Taylor, Texas to IdeII "Ike" and Norma Stoll Powell. His father worked for TP&L in Corsicana, TX and his mother was employed at Adams Hat Factory until her retirement, also in Corsicana, TX.

James and his brother Dennis grew up in Temple, TX and then moved to Corsicana after his dad was transferred. James graduated from Corsicana High School, then attended and graduated from Navarro College in May, 1970. He continued his studies at North Texas State University in Denton, Tx and graduated on May 16, 1972 with a Bachelor of Business Administration-Management degree. James worked at Safeway grocery store while attending school and after graduation he moved to Irving, Tx. and continued to work at Safeway. While living in Irving James decided to follow in his father's footsteps and started out as a meter reader for TP&L Co. He had many interesting and unusual stories concerning his job.

His next job was also for TP&L in Rockwall, TX as a customer service rep. While working in Rockwall he met his wife of 48 years and they were married on 10/17/1975. Soon after marrying they were transferred by TP&L to Tyler, TX. While living in Tyler James and Jenell became parents to two sons.

Many opportunities to represent TP&L were given to James during his time in Tyler. He was one of the first Loaned Executive for United Way in 1977, and he was also secretary for Mid-City Kiwanis Club in 1980. His next transfer took his family to Cameron, TX again as a customer service rep. and there he was the representative for the Cameron Area United Way in 1985, president of the Cameron Community Service Lodge and was president of the Cameron Lions Club in 1986. And the last transfer he received was back to Tyler, TX in 1986. James retried in 2006 after working for TP&L, Texas Electric and Oncor (all the same company, just different names). James ended up working for the electric company for 34 years.

After retiring he was home for about 3 months and decided he would get another job. He went to work at the Hampton's at Greenridge Independent Living Community as the assistance manager. He worked there for 13 years and really enjoyed talking with and helping all the retirees that lived there.

James was a member of Whitehouse Methodist Church in Whitehouse, TX. for 39 years. He helped with the boy's baseball team, he was an usher, and also helped with keeping the outside church property looking manicured and mowed. James was also a member of the Methodist Men's group. He and his family have loved and cherished many wonderful years with the caring and friendly people that have and do attend this church.

James' was an avid fisherman, a longtime Dallas Cowboy's football fan (truth be told he loved watching just about any sports) and the other thing he enjoyed was keeping his lawn looking the best in the neighborhood.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Jenell Powell, his son, Jason M. Powell, his partner, Darlene Flores and her daughter, Ashlea and son, Jody M. Powell and his wife, Ann and their daughter Alaina.

James' parents and brother all passed before him.
