Roy Thoene

Roy Thoene, 80, of Tyler, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 29th. 

Funeral services will be held Friday, September 6th at Flint Baptist Church at 10:00 am.  A visitation will be held on Thursday, September 5th from 5:00pm - 7:00pm at Boren-Conner Funeral Home in Bullard, TX. A private interment will be at Cathedral in the Pines Cemetery in Tyler, Texas.

Roy was born in Neiderwald, Texas, March 25,1944 to parents Alfred and Leonora Thoene. He attended school until the 9th grade, where he decided to drop out and help support his family by learning to be a butcher. He married his sweetheart, Barbara Jean, in 1965 after a whirlwind love that started just 6 months before. They enjoyed dates cutting up meat at Lovin’s Meat Store. Roy started pastoring in January of 1972 and retired in 2023. Recently, he enjoyed being the weatherman and having coffee with his new friends at Garden Estates in Tyler. Roy made everyone feel like family and went to great lengths to be there for his congregation day or night. He was an avid jokester and loved making everyone smile. Roy’s greatest passions were his meat house, pastoring, and his grandkids/great-grandkids.

He is survived by his daughter, Terri and husband, Larry Swinford of Tyler; daughter, Toni Portwood and wife, Julie Burks of Liberty Hill; son, Todd Thoene of Brownsboro; granddaughter, Erica and husband, Jeremy Hasley of Whitehouse; grandson, Nick and wife, Bayley Swinford of Edom; granddaughter, Taylor and husband, Harley Winters of Georgetown; great grandchildren: Will, Lawson, Pryce, Hudson, Alyson, Reagan, Emmett, Kennedy, Carter and Bear as well as brother, Albert Thoene; brother, Charles Thoene; brother, Clayton Thoene and numerous special nieces and nephews. 

He is preceded in death by his father, Alfred Thoene; mother, Leonora Thoene; wife, Barbara Jean Thoene; brother, Robert Thoene; sister, Shirley Cox and brother, Raymond Thoene. 

Officiants are Dr. Paul Saylors and Mark George. 

Pallbearers are Ted Lilly, Don Lilly, Randy Bateman, Roger Boggs, Danny Arnold, Eddy Siler, Cliff Wallace, and Floyd Griffin. Honorary Pallbearers are Joe Thigpen, W.C. Hauk, Jerry Cole, Nathan Parker, Kent Hensley, Darwin Stainback, Jimmy Schmidt, Ronnie Bickley, Jack Bickley, Scott McKeethan, Phillip LeBlanc, Randall Thoene and Jan Hill.
